Perry Sprague

Perry Sprague, probably born in Jonesville, Ohio about 1829. Married .
Matilda .. Probably born about 1836 - 1837, in Indiana.
The 1860 & 1870 St. Joseph County Census shows the family
in Sherman Michigan.
Perry Sprague in the "Sprague Project"

The 1880 Lorain County Census shows Perry, age 58, Matilda, age 44,
& family living in Huntington, Ohio.
Perry listed his occupation as Farmer.

Perry died in 1898 & Matilda died in 1904. They are buried
in the Greenwood Cemetery in Wellington, Oh. Perry's granddaughter, Mildred, Margaret's baby twin sister,
is buried in the same grave as Perry, above him.

Michigan Military records show Perry Sprague Enlisted in
Company E. (reorganized) 11th Michigan Infantry,
at Sherman, for one year, age 36.

Mustered out at Nashville, Tenn.

....Delbert Sprague is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with his parents.

....Orange Sprague worked Security in the Youngstown area and is buried in Girard, Oh.

Josephine Sprague was born 1877 in Michigan and the family appears in the
1880 Lorain County, Oh. Census. This would indicate that the family
moved to Ohio between 1877 & 1880

William Harrison Sprague & Mary Tait Rofe,
married June 21, 1906. They lived on Hamilton Street and then Adams street in Wellington, Oh......Children in order of birth.

1. Margaret Ethel & 2. Mildred (twins, Mildred died shortly after birth) Born August 11, 1907, Wellington, Ohio Margaret died in Buffalo New York. Mildred is buried in the same
grave as her Grandfather, Perry, in Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington, Ohio. Cemetery Records indicate that William
paid for Perry & Matilda's grave plots in 1907.

3. Bella Robina Sprague, Born July 20, 1909, Wellington, Ohio, Died January 19, 1925 at the age of 16. Buried with William & Mary.

4. Clara Elisabeth Sprague was born April 7, 1912, on Adams Street in Wellington. The only sibling not born on Hamilton St. in Wellington, Oh. Married Ralph O. Leiby,
March 20, 1933

5. Chester Luane Sprague, Born May 18, 1915 Wellington, Ohio, Married Dorothy Karnes September 14, 1940, Divorced 1987. Died ..... Buried Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington, Oh.

..Mary Tait (Rofe) Sprague was born October 11, 1877 in Middleburg Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She died about a week after the birth of Evelyn, December 29, 1921, in Wellington,
Ohio, of Bed Fever, at age 48.

.........When Mary died, Children services did not let the four kids live with just a man and all four children were put into a County Children's Home in Oberlin, Ohio, for awhile. Eventually Margaret was allowed to move home with William.

.......William was born November 22, 1863 possibly inWhite Pigeon, Michigan. He died in his sleep, December 13, 1922,
at age 59, apparently from a heart attack, about a year after
Mary died. Margaret found him.

...William worked at the Street Car Barn, on Oberlin Road, in Elyria. His hip was injured in an accident with a streetcar, at
the car barn, and he was crippled.

No longer able to work in the car barn William went to
work at Wellington Machine, on Dewolfe Street, in
Wellington, as a Domestic (Machinist). William was involved
in cutting the Gingerbread on the Wellington Town Hall,
as it was cut at Wellington Machine.

William was also a sign painter and painted hitching post
signs for the local merchants in Wellington.

William was described as soft spoken and easy going.
It is reported that he never involved himself in the discipline
of his children.

..........William & Mary are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio with
daughter, Bella, who died in 1925, at age 15

............Margaret then moved to Buffalo New York to live with Edna Forbush. Edna was Mary's niece. She was never married and did not let Margaret date. Margaret never married.

...........Chester (Chet) was sent to Grafton, Ohio to live with Josephine Whitcomb (Sp?), Williams sister.

...........Clara went to Elyria to live with Emma Hoffman, William's sister and her husband Valentine.

............Evelyn was adopted by Ray & Rachel Fulk of
Wellington. They later moved to Lodi, Oh. Evelyn & husband Charles were cremated and buried above Ray & Rachel at Spencer, Oh. Cemetery

Clara Elizabeth Sprague, born April 1912, died March 18, 2006 in Wellington, Oh.
Married Ralph Otis Leiby born Oct 16, 1908 in Homerville, Oh. Died Apr 7, 1987.
They married on March 20, 1933 at the Baptist Parsonage on West Main St. in Spencer.
They lived together on East Ave and moved to 302 North Main Street, Spencer, Oh. in 1944
Ralph worked as the custodian for Black River High School in Spencer.
Ralph & Clara are buried together in Spencer, Medina County, Oh. Cemetery.

They had three children, Ralph Dean, Janet & Clara Jean, who were raised in Spencer, Ohio.

Sprague beginnings in America:

The Leiby/Sprague connection. Leafa Mae was Grandpa Ralphs mother & James Edward Davidson's sister.
James was married to Cornelia Sprague, Grandma Claras Aunt.
So Grandpa's uncle was married to Grandma's aunt.
